We started this business after years of working in the VET sector, where we discovered something we both genuinely loved: helping passionate, skilled people become exceptional trainers. Watching someone step out of industry and into a training role, and then grow into it with confidence — that’s what drives us.

We’re Jess and Tom — partners in life and business. Between us, we’ve worked in training, compliance, operations, recruitment, and education delivery. We’ve seen firsthand how hard it can be to find a trainer who not only ticks the boxes but fits the culture, connects with students, and actually thrives in the role.

Meet the team

Jessica Walker

Jess has worked across every level of training delivery — starting as a trainee trainer and working her way through roles in facilitation, team leadership, training management, and instructional design. With over five years of direct RTO experience and a background in workplace coaching, she’s known for building systems that actually work — both for trainers and for compliance.

Jess has developed countless training products, safety systems, and fully digitalised learning environments across the construction, logistics, and beauty sectors. She’s also played key roles in preparing RTOs for ASQA, WorkSafe and internal audits, designing everything from PD tracking systems to paperless validation frameworks.

At Ready, Set, Train, Jess is the creative and compliance powerhouse. She drives content, automation, IT (yes, including fixing things when they break), and is the go-to person for aspiring trainers ready to make their move.

Tom mckinlay

Tom brings nearly a decade of leadership experience in the RTO space, having worked his way from course consultant through to general manager across multiple training organisations. He’s managed high-performing sales teams, overseen operations, and led marketing strategy — but more importantly, he understands what RTOs really need when hiring a trainer.

With experience in both education and hospitality, Tom knows what makes a placement last. He leads all business-side operations at Ready, Set, Train — working closely with RTO clients, coordinating recruitment processes, handling compliance-focused support, and (let’s be honest) making most of the phone calls.

He’s the calm, methodical engine behind the business, and the one who ensures every moving part runs smoothly.

Together, Jess and Tom created Ready, Set, Train to solve problems they’d faced again and again — from trying to onboard the right trainer, to scrambling for last-minute audit evidence, to watching passionate people get lost in the process.

They believe the industry deserves better.
